In this course, patient safety is defined as the prevention of the negative effects resulting from errors, whether or not evident or harmful to the patient which, can often lead to adverse health care such as unnecessary treatment, treatment complications and delay in correct diagnosis. The errors or mistakes in the course of management of patient can have a negative impact on the patient and can potentially compromise the safety of the patient. Patient safety had been previously overlooked by medical personnel including the laboratory staff and is now a growing area of interest. This course aims to improve the knowledge and skills of medical laboratory scientists (MLS) and other laboratory personnel on patient safety with the ultimate goal of helping MLS to improve patient safety in their workplaces.
